Water Filters and Purifiers

When you purchase a faucet mounted “water filter” as your kitchen water filtration system, be advised that they are not water “purifiers”, they are “filters”.  These are 2 totally different products, although they have been used interchangeably.  There are things that water filters can and cannot do.  They’re great at taking out chlorine, and they aerate the water which makes it taste better.  However, these filters are limited as to any improvement that they actually make to water quality.

Brita faucet mounted filters are well known.  They describe their products as follows:

“The Brita® Pitcher Filter is not intended to purify water. Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system. Individuals requiring water of special microbiological purity should follow the advice of their doctor or local health officials regarding the use and consumption of their tap water and Brita® water”.

What Filters Do

When you turn on your faucet, water first passes through a non-woven screen around the filter. This screen traps sediment like sand and dirt.

Next, the water flows through a compressed block of carbon and zeolite. Each little carbon granule has millions of little pores on the surface. These pores act like a sponge, and are great for removing chemicals like chlorine.

The slower that water flow through carbon, the more contact time carbon has with water, and the more chemicals can be removed.
