Posted on January 8, 2014

water_dropsWe take advantage of things every day. That there will be food on our plates, decent clothing for us to wear and when we go outside, clean air to breathe.

What about your water?

We take advantage of our water resources every day. The faucet flips on with ease and out pours the liquid we need for making our coffee, cooking our dinner and washing our face.

But when was the last time you actually knew what was in your water?

If you live in a large town or city with a dense population, the water source usually comes from a town supply. It is regulated and tested on a routine basis and the results are available to anyone publicly. These rules however, do not apply to an individually owned well. In fact, it is up to the homeowner to test their water to maintain good quality.

There are a variety of quality indicators and contaminants that should be tested for, an example of quality indicators are:

  • The pH level, which is an indicator of how acidic your water is.
  • Coliforms. This includes Total Coliforms and Fecal Coliforms, the bacteria that lives in the digestive systems of animals.

And when testing for contaminants, the homeowner should keep these in mind:

  • Organic compounds that are volatile like, fuel and chemicals that are from industrial run off.
  • Nitrates that are at high enough levels to make someone sick.
